How can I improve my metabolism?

Dr. Els Pastijn

Every walk, every workout, every conscious choice is a signal to your body. Your body responds — with more energy, more strength, and a metabolism that works better for you.

By moving and exercising, you stimulate the growth of mitochondria — the small "power plants" in your cells. They convert nutrients and oxygen into usable energy. The better and more numerous they are, the more vitality you feel: more endurance, a more active metabolism, and often more zest for life. They are in almost all your cells, but especially in your muscles, because they do so much work.

What are mitochondria?

  • They convert nutrients (glucose, fatty acids) and oxygen into energy
  • Present in almost all cells, especially abundant in muscles

How do you get more and better functioning mitochondria?

  • More and larger through endurance training/HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
  • More efficient through regular movement

What type of exercise is best for this?

Anything that activates large muscle groups and makes your heart beat a little faster:

  • Endurance/aerobic training (cycling, running, walking)
  • Interval training / HIIT
  • Strength circuits with continuous work at pace (higher repetitions, little rest)

Large muscle groups (glutes, thighs, back) provide more effect.

You don't have to change everything at once. Every extra minute you move is already a signal to your body.
